Donor Profile: John Titus

From South Student to Global Aviation Entrepreneur

When John Titus returned to campus this year, he found the aviation hangars almost exactly as he remembered them…the same buildings, the same rhythm of hands-on work that had once felt entirely new to him. More than fifty years had passed since he first walked through those doors, but standing there again, he could still trace the outline of the young man he'd been: 20 years old, newly arrived from Kerala, India, with nothing but determination and a willingness to bet on a different future.

That bet was South Seattle College.

In 1971, John left his home and family to pursue specialized training in aeronautical technology at what was then a much smaller campus with a growing aviation program. The technical grounding and industry connections he built here would end up shaping the rest of his life.

"South Seattle College gave me the foundation to pursue my dream," John says. "Supporting today's students is my way of helping others discover what's possible."

After graduating, John spent a decade in aircraft maintenance, learning the industry from the inside before deciding to bet on himself again. In 1984, he founded Aero Controls. What started as a small operation grew, under his leadership, into one of the most respected independent providers of aircraft component maintenance, repair, and overhaul services in the world, known for its precision and reach across the industry.

John's path from international student to company founder is now chronicled in his memoir, Aviation Alchemist: The Visionary Behind Aero Controls; the story of how education, mentorship, and perseverance turned opportunity into a career, a company, and eventually a legacy.

That legacy is one John and his wife, Kusumam have chosen to extend.

Together, they established The John & Kusumam Titus Endowed Scholarship, supporting aviation students and international students working toward the same kind of future John once set out to build.

"South Seattle College played a pivotal role in my journey," he reflected during his visit. It's a role he's determined to make possible for others by investing in students today so they can access the same doors that once opened for him.

Standing in that familiar hangar, decades after he first arrived, John Titus is proof of what one chance at education can become, for a student, an industry, and generations still to come.
